There are different punishments given to people who drink alot of alcohol and drive in different countries in the world.

In Tanzania,those who drink and drive are forced to pay a fine of Tanzanian shillings 30,000 if found guilty. In Australia the names of drunk drivers are published in the newspapers under the caption "He's drunk and in jail".

In Malaysia the driver is jailed, and if married the spouse is also jailed.

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims was started by RoadPeace in 1993. Since then it has been observed and promoted worldwide by several NGOs, including the European Federation of Road Traffic Victims (FEVR) and its associated organizations.

On 26th October 2005, the United Nations endorsed it as a global day to be observed every third Sunday in November each year, making it a major advocacy day for road traffic injury prevention. WHO and the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration encourage governments and NGOs around the world to commemorate this day.

MY TAKE:"This is appropriate day of acknowledgement for victims of road traffic crashes and their families, I hope, the day will be commemorated by giving support to the victims with post-trauma disabilities and their lives are in total mess. Demonstrations, speeches and songs won't help these people.

Likewise, I would be more than happy if the Police force will come up with strategies to curb escalating accident statistics in the country".

Road Humps: Are There Any Standards?

In the photo you can see a speed hump or commonly known as ''speed bumps''. It has been a common practice for road contractors to fix the bumps as a way of controlling over speeding. But I have been asking myself,'Are these humps erected according to a certain standard?'' I am asking this due to the fact that some of them are so big to make a small car go side ways to avoid damaging some parts under the car.In the picture are small humps but fixed few feet apart,others are just one but so huge. Can anyone help on this please?

More than 300 people are feared dead following a capsized ship in between Zanzibar and Pemba islands. To this hour, a source in Zanzibar said that about 270 passengers have been saved while about 50 dead bodies have been recovered. The source added that, most of those saved are children including a 7 months old baby.

It wasnt easy for me to believe whata i saw, the photo shows a boat full of passangers! my investigation revealed that, no one determines if the boat is full, no life jackets and any other stuff for protection if anything happens along the journey. This is lake Tanganyika known to have deep waters. I dont know what SUMATRA could tell us about this.

As I was driving along Morogoro Road, the car infront of me with registration number T297 ACS Toyota mark II I saw something so strange. As you can see in the photo, adjacent to the white Mark II is a pickup.On that material day, the passanger of the pickup threw a bottle of mineral water on the road(as usual), to my surprise the driver of Mark II T297 ACS picked the bottle and handed it over to the passanger of that pickup. I've never seen someone so environmental concious, that is something others should emulate.

In my posts I have been showing the impact of tuk tuk(motorcycle) accidents in the society but today's post is a bit different. It is a story I will never forget in my entire life.

It was around 9.00am I was heading to work then I saw a mob at Kimara staring at something burning. I had to slow down my car and parked somewhere so that I could see what was happening. I could not believe my eyes, i saw a guy being set ablaze as he was accused of stealing a tuktuk! But further follow-ups revealed that, the guy was not a thief, he was given a tuk tuk by the mechanic whom was repairing his!

This guy was wrongly accused by mob justice to be a thief! I will never forget what I saw. Really, seeing a human being burning, it is not for the faint-hearted.

This is a stretch of dusty road in Manyoni,singida region. I was told it is a stretch of about 60km on the Dodoma-Singida Road. Look at how the vehicles are negotiating their way and in a very high speed especially the buses. Really, it is not easy to avoid accidents in a situation like this. Hopefully, this stretch of dusty and bumpy road has been completed.

Chenge Guilty of Causing Death by Careless Driving

Alex Bitekeye, The Citizen Reporter writes, '' Former cabinet minister Andrew Chenge(above photo) was yesterday found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving and sentenced to a total of three years imprisonment.

However, the Kinondoni court Magistrate gavee Mr. Chenge, a former Attorney General, the option of fines totalling Sh 700,000,whiich the Bariadi west MP paid promptly to avoid a stint behind bars after he was convicted on all four counts he had been charged with....convicted of driving dangerously on apublic road and causing the death of the two people by dangerous driving and fined him Sh 250,000 for each offence or serve a year in jail in default on each account. the second and fourth counts were driving an uninsured vehicle and damage to property,respectively,for which the former Infrastructure Development Minister was fined Sh100,000 for each offence.....''

NOTE:Alot has been said by the general public regarding this case,but the decision has been reached by the judiciary.

Driving in upcountry is a learning process, leisure, relaxation you name it. In my recent drive to Musoma, a town along the shores of Lake victoria I saw these 'dancing lizards', i call them that because when you approach them they 'rythmically' move their heads left and right as if they are dancing to a certain tune. Some of the kids who were around by that time told me that they are called 'butungu', a local name. The kids told me that, sometimes you can sing and they would dance!

Well, as you drive in upcountry there is always something new to learn. What do you think?

MOI receives 68accident Victims!

Within 24 hours(from yesterday 7.00am to today 7.00am) Muhimbili orthopaedic Institute received 68 accident cases, out of these 30 were admitted and 38 were discharged after treatment.

According to Acting Hospital Public Relations officer, Mwamini king'homella, the victims were from different parts of Dar es salaaam city and they had injuries of various types i.e. heads and bone injuries from arms legs and ribs.

The number of motorcycle accidents and people killed as a result is increasing at an unprecedented pace, with more than 500 human lives lost between January and September, this year.

Commissioner of operation in the Police Force Mr. Paul Chagonja, said in Dar es salaam yesterday that about 10,000 accidents occured during the period under review which also injured 3,407 people.

Mr. Chagonja told journalists that the accidents were increasing at an alarming rate and that during the same period last year 407 people died and 2,199 others were injured, attributing the mishaps to reckless driving and unqualified motorcyclists.

''We have worked out strategies tha will help us get rid of unqualified motorcyclists and hence save people's lives''.

It might sound as a joke but that iz the truth witnessed by most of the residents of Kimara,Mbezi, Kibamba,Kiluvya etc all these are within the outskirts of the city of Dar es salaam.Iimagine a traffic jam from Ubungo traffic lights(ubungo mataa) to mbezi kwa musuguri! this is what is happening on this road these days.''These jams would make us poor'',one of the residents in the area said. He added that this is due to the fact that the jams consumes alot of fuel,productive time and hence they loose alot financially.

To some of us who manages to use shortcuts(panya roads) as seen on the photo,yet face the problems of potholes on those roads. for example in the photo is a baruti-msewe road via university of Dar es salaam,which is in a sorry state at the moment with potholes allover. May be Hon. Minister Magufuli could help us on this by ordering the repaire these feeder roads instea of projecting about the construction of expensive flyovers.

Hi all, it has been long since I last posted something on my blog. Well, I was bogged down by some issues which took most of my time. Please bear with me.

I was making follow-ups regarding the wave of motor accidents in the country within this month. I happened to talk to some guys who said ''you know, most of the people believe that December is the end of the year whereas there are so many motor accidents. But I can assure you that,September is the end the year as far as accidents are concerned. Go through Traffic Police data or hospitals like Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute(MOI), you will prove what am saying''.

MOI spokesman Mr. Jumaa Almasi said, ''.... it is true, the number of accidents received in the month of September is so high in almost every year, we are yet to establish why is that''.

Now I go back to my readers, ''so it is not true that the number of accidents in December isn't as high as in September?Did you know that?''.

Kibaha Accidents 3-We Forget So Soon!

As we mourn the demise of 11 people who died at ''Kibamba Accident'' we forget that last year in May there was a grisly accident same as this one happened at Kibaha kwa Mathias area. The lorry (photo above) rammed into a daladala which knocked a motorcycle and then rammed into a daladala. But it seems we forget so soon!

Above and below, this is a stretch between Morogoro and Chalinze, road construction took into consideration widening of all those dangerous areas so that vehicles could easily manouvre their way.

We all feel that accidents are a menace to the society. Where do we start in curbing these accidents? Not a bad idea if we emulate what the contractors did along Morogoro-Chalinze stretch. Let us start with Chalinze-Ubungo the famously known ''accident-prone'' area.

Accidents at Kibaha: Scientific Reasoning?-1

Well, I am one of those who are touched with the wave of accidents in the country. I believe there are a number of factors which contribute to the rising number of accidents in the country. In a series of articles i would try to explain why Chalinze-Ubungo is accident prone area.

This has been demonstreted by the Dar es salaam City Council when they arected a billboard at Ubungo maji congratulationg all drivers who managed to pass this accident prone area. Unfortunately, the billboard was knocked down by lorries to the extent that what remains are some aluminium posts where the billboard used to stand.

Therefore, this area is known as accident-prone, to me this a big step towards solving this problem. As a daily user of this road, for sure this is accident-prone area. But the areas where most of these accidents happen are kibaha and kibamba.

But my observation noted the following, the road is narrow, what do we expect if the cars are overtaking in narrow. Far from reckless driving, the road width(though am not an expert on road construction) could cause accidents to a great deal.

If we are to make comparison, the number of accidents from Chalinze to morogoro are so minimal due to the fact that, the road construction took into account widening of the areas which are dangerous (as Hon. Magufuli used to say 'sehemu korofi'). The areas are wide and one can drive comfortably with no hassle.

Therefore, Tanroads and its parent Ministry need to look at this and i believe by emulating what was done on chalinze-Morogoro section, the number of accidents could go down significantly.

Can somebody articulate why it seems there is some kind of pattern or a logical explanantion of why some of the most grisly accidents have happened in or near kibaha for many many years now.Is there any scientific reason for these occurences that our rulers have overlooked?

Kwa sababu siamini kama ni wingi wa magari au ufinyu wa barabara tu unaweza kuelezea ajali hizi. Kuna kitu kinasababisha na uhakika siyo cha kishirikina lazma kuna sababu ya kisayansi ya matukio haya.

The Government has No Winch for major Accidents?

Well, Kibamba aacident was an eye opener to many of us that the government does not have a winch to uplift heavy vehicles like the oil tanker involved in the accident occured two days ago leaving 10 people dead.

Many wananchi who were on the scene, could not do anything to help the victims from 5.00am till around 10.30am when the government managed to hire one from a private company called BMK!This has been approved by the Commander Mohamed Mpinga,Head of traffic Police.

This takes my memories back about 4 0r 5 years ago when a lorry overturned at the same place and all vehicles including upcountry buses were forced to use the bagamoyo route.

I thought that was a lesson enough to force the government to find a winch to alleviate such disasters! It was a shame, the road could not be used for more that 3 days because there was no winch to remove the lorry? Imagine the troubles people went through especially those residing in Kibaha and nearby villages.

The Disaster Management Team which is under the Prime Ministers office should tell us something on this. Also the Ministry of Infrastructure Development should as well give us satisfying reasons why they have failed us on this? Why private companies like BMK and Bakressa having the heavy loaders while the government does not have any?

Yet Another Accident At Mbezi Mwisho, 2 Dead!

People still grieve as to the accident occured yesterday at kibamba area. This night another accident occured at Mbezi Mwisho bus stop, few Kilometers from Kibamba where 2 people are dead following this accident.
The cause of the accident is such that a lorry rammed into a packed bus.
Meanwhile relatives tries to identify their loved ones following kibamba accident. Those identified were named as Zainab Alli, Esther Paulo(who was pregnant),Abdul Twalibu,Shukuru Hussein and Faraja Ngalamba.

It was a terrible accident which happened yesterday at dawn, at kibamba darajani along Morogoro Road in the outskirts of the city of Dar es salaam. A minibus famously known as ''daladala'' was knocked down by an oil tanker leaving all 10 passengers dead! Amongst the dead was a pregnant woman whose belly was cut open leaving the dead child out of the womb.

Extraordinarily,at around 8pm two lorries collided head-on at the same place, leaving on-lookers with different interpretations of the accident.

Passanger bus with registration number T 316 AZR , an AM Company, was involved in an accident which left 24 dead and 45 others injured. The accident occured in Kitangiri village between Nzega and Igunga. Tabora Region Police Commander confirmed the report.

He said the accident occured at 4.15pm on its way to Mwanza from Arusha. The accident occured due to high speed.

It amazes me to find this car with old plate numbers roaming around the streets of Dar. In the upcountry where there is some kind of laxity I have seen alot of cars with old plate numbers, but in Dar? What if this car is involved in an accident, will the traffic police use the old plate numbers? is possible for one to get insurance cover if say this car knocks a pedestrian? i had alot in mind, really.

This evening there was a terrible accidents at Mbezi kwa Musuguri where two lorries collided head-on. one of the lorries knocked women who sells fried fish along the road, one of the them believed to have died on the spot.

This morogoro Road, especially from Ubungo maji to mlandizi has been accident prone area. This week alone, there were about ten major accidents.

To me and my friends this trip was full of surprises! Firstly, we couldnt believe our eyes that Mangrooves could produce large pieces of timber! But one of the people residing in this area (Nyamisati) told us that, what we always see are small mangroove trees and not the big ones. "..some of them are as big as baobab trees".

Secondly, this is the area where salt water(from the ocean) meets fresh water (from river).But which suprised us the most, is the existence of some fish who roam in both fresh and salt water! There was no one to give scientific explanation to quench our thirst of knowledge on this!

But I was keen to learn of safety measures and the existence of safety gears in the boats, dhows and ships but to our utter surprise, very few, i might say 2% of the vessels had safety gears. the question is, what if the accident occurs while in deep sea?

World Remembrance Day of Road Crash Victims!

Yesterday it was World Remembrance Day of Road Crash Victims which was marked on 15th November 2009 at Mnazi mmoja Grounds, Dar es salaam. According to a statement issued by SUMATRA Consumer Consultative Council,The World Remembrance Day of Road Crash Victims find its origin in the UN resolution A/60/5(2005) of the 26th October 2005, which adopted the World Day "as the appropriate acknowledgement for victims of road traffic crashes and their families" and called for its recognition by Member States and the International Community.

The United Nations through the above mentioned resolution decalred that the 3rd Sunday of each November would be marked as the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, and requested member countries and international community to mark it in their respective countries. This year, 2009, will be the first time that a public event is held to mark the day in Tanzania.

As people were marking the day at Mnazi Mmoja Grounds, the picture below shows the victim of a road crash which occured in Dar es salaam At the very moment people were demonstrating along the streets of Dar es salaam to mark the day.

This accident occured yesterday, the victim was driving a motorcycle which was knocked by a fast moving car along Morogoro Road.The leg has been badly injured below the knee. The photo was taken when the victim was being attended at the Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute(MOI).

But, as we mark this day are we really taking steps to curb the increasing number of motor traffic accidents in the country?

Driving Upcountry-5 (Through Ben Mkapa Bridge)

The bridge is about 7kms long! Indeed a long drive.
On top of the bridge we saw the bridge was sort of swinging when a heavy vehicle passed over the bridge. This forced us to lear more and we ended up under the bridge. We saw these rubbers which acts as shock absorbers!You can see these between the two concrete blocks, up and down.

Wow! white sands under the bridge. We felt like going down and play with the sand, but people sacred that if we do that we'll end up being delicious meal for the alligators living in that river!!

My experiences while driving upcountry have become and more adventurous,I have leanrt alot of staff as far as these trips are concerned! These are the pictures of the Benjamin Mkapa Bridge along River Rufiji. A river known to have tormented people from the southern region of this country whereas during rain season people spent weeks to cross the river. So the construction of this bridge was a revolution for people living in those regions.

My conversation with the people living around the area, that is Ikwiriri they told me that, "The constructin of the bridge was full of surprises, for example when the Italians started the constructions there was alot of ''Supernatural things" happening to the extent that the Italians called all the famous oldmen in the village and they decided to slaughter a bull for a sacrifice so that they could be 'allowed by the ancestors' to proceed with the construction". i talked to more than 5 people and they narrated the same story. But they say the sacrifices were successful and the consruction continued. This strange world!!!!! Well I also learnt that there no accidents occured over the bridge. That is good news.

Polisi mkoani Arusha imepiga marufuku tabia ya baadhi ya askari wa kikosi cha Usalama Barabarani, kuwapokonya funguo na kadi za magari, madereva wanaokiuka sheria za usalama barabarani.

Msimamo huo ulitolewa hivi karibuni na Kamanda wa Polisi wa Mkoa wa Arusha, Matei Basilio, alipokuwa akizungumza katika sherehe za kufunga Wiki ya Nenda Kwa Usalama.

Spotlight: Unnecessary Traffic Jams!

From Ubungo to Kibaha, this area is becoming "traffic-jam-prone-areas", but if you ask me, these jams are due to negligence and lack of creativity in problem solving, for example Tanroads was supposed to have a heavey duty 'winch' to remove lorries which breakdown along the road as seen on the photo, so that other users could continue using the road without a hitch. The lorry on the photo, remained in the area for the whole day, this caused jams unnecessarily.

I stand to be corrected, but much as i know, this is a highway how come bumps are everywhere in a highway? If you ask, they tell you bumps are fixed to reduce accidents! Sure? How come there are alot of bumps from Kimara Stop over to Mbezi Mwisho, yet people are knocked down by cars almost everyday.

I think Tanroads Research Unit, if at all they have, should do its homework effectively to come with good solutions rather than just fixing bumps which are now a pain on the neck.

May be you have seen them on various highways as shown above. They stop cars and ask weird questions, which indicates motives for bribery.

They hide under the trees or behind other stopped cars and when you approach they come out of hiding and order you to stop suddenly without even considering the speed of the car.

They stand in the middle of the road which could cause accident for them to be knocked down.

Traffic Police halt Bumps Erection at Kimara!(Tanroads Should Apologize!).

Traffic police have halted road bumbs construction at Mbezi and Kimara Temboni in Dar es salaam, after the exercise had caused untold inconvinience to road users on Monday.

Dar es salaam Regional Traffic Commander, Vitus Nikata, said yesterday that they have advised Tanroads to stop construction of the bumps, until the police and Tanroads agree on appropriate day and time to carry out the exercise, with minimum disturbance to road users.

Mbezi and kimara Temboni residents had to spend up to five hours on the road on Monday,due to unprecedented traffic jam resulting from construction of the bumps.

Tanroads officials could not be reached yesterday for comment, but erection of the bumps was Tanroads response to demands of residents ofd the area, follwing frequent accidents by speeding cars.

YeS!: Being the victim of what happened on that day, I think Tanroads need to be serious! We arrived at Ubungo Traaffic Lights at around 8pm, I spent more than 4 hours on the road to arrive at Kimara-Temboni at exactly 12.00pm!

I cant imagine why Tanroads did this to us? They know for sure monday is the busiest day, why did they do what they were doingon that material day? they could that on Saturday or Sunday? Or why didnt they do that during the night? For sure Tanroads flopped on this.

They show us that their 'research Unit' (if at all they have) does not perform its task efficiently because they could at least know when and at what time time to do that without havoc to road users.

Tanroads should apologize to us, what they did is not acceptable in any civilized world!

It was a miracle that no one was killed."This was the reaction of traumatised and relieved Merebank residents after a SA Airlink twin-engine aircraft crash-landed in their densely-populated suburb adjoining Durban International Airport.It smashed into vacant land, slid across the narrow Sambalpur Road and crashed through the concrete fence into the sports field at Merebank Secondary School, injuring the three crew and a municipal worker in the crashing aircraft's path. All were taken to St Augustine's Hospital.The pilot, Captain Alistair Freeman, who was trapped in the plane for some three hours before being stablisied and freed, sustained multiple injuries, including facial fractures, broken ribs and ankle and a suspected punctured lung. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition and on a ventilator.
Freeman, who at one stage was talking to paramedics, but was then put on a ventilator while still trapped in the plane, was airlifted to hospital by helicopter.The first officer, Sonja Bierman, also sustained multiple injuries, the airline said last night. She has broken both ankles and a hand and has sustained fractures in the pelvic area and chest.Flight attendant, Rodelle Oosthuizen, sustained facial injuries and a fractured spine.Street cleaner Abraham Mthethwa suffered broken legs after being struck and the plane's wing landed on him.A nursing sister at St Augustine's hospital this morning said all the patients were in a stable condition, but Mthethwa was still in a lot of pain. It appears to be second time unlucky for Captain Alistair Freeman, who was critically injured aboard SA Airlink J41 when it ditched into a Merebank school field in Durban yesterday.While this could not be officially confirmed, South African pilots' blogs were last night referring to this as Freeman's second crash in the past few years.

A Lorry Rammed Into a House Killing One!

What remains of the house are just rubbles when this lorry with registration number T885 ASW rammed into a house at night along Morogoro road near kimara mahakamani, killing one person who was in the house at that night. This is the second time for the lorries being packed along the road, to damage the houses along the road. What surprises me is the fact that this lorry's plate number was sort of hidden as you can see in the photo above!

Extrawide Load:A Pain in the Neck For Other Road Users!

The pictures above show a convoy of loriies with extrawide load. This was along Morogoro Road in Dar es salaam. The other road users had to bear the pain of the longest que caused by this. I think this convoy could pass during the night to inconviniences for other road users. On that material day we had to spend more than 2 hours on the jam!

The traffic police doesnt seem to notice that the car is on the wrong site, he was just talking with the driver of this lorry!

A dangerously packed lorry, no reflectors just some scattred grass!

Here, it was getting dark and the driver of the car i was in didnt notice that the lorry doesnt move! Thank God, he was not overspeeding otherwise we could be adding statistics to the already escalating number of death due to road accidents.

YEs! again and again, i have the number of accidents caused by wrong packed lorries like the ones i saw on my trip to Dodoma. Can't we have 'Highway patrols' to make sure that safety measures are taken by these lorry drivers?

Barely a week after the renovation of Kawolo Hospital, yet unknown people found their way in and made away with a door of the hospital mortuary, leaving bodies inside exposed.Kawolo Hospital, which is Mukono District’s major hospital, is currently under renovation in a bid to improve its image, and the mortuary is one of the areas targeted during this exercise. But before the exercise could move any further, unscrupulous persons on August 23 invaded the hospital situated in Lugazi Town and removed the mortuary door which according to the medical Superintendent, Dr. Ivan Kamya, was taken and sold as scrap to one of the steel industries.The search for scrap in Mukono and Lugazi has seen people lose valuable items including sauce pans. The area is also notorious for destruction of road signs which are cut and sold as scrap. During his tour of Mukono District recently, Mr Richard Mivule the regional police commander in charge of central region, heard from residents that some people dealing in scrap, invade their homes and steal anything metallic.
